Mayday 2010 in Blackball

Following the success of last year’s Blackball Strike anniversary celebrations, Blackball will again be hosting Mayday celebrations in 2010. All members of the Labour History Project are invited to join in the festivities.

2009 Rona Bailey Memorial Lecture

Rona Bailey was an icon of left-wing politics in New Zealand as well as being a founding member of the TUHP Committee. To acknowledge her massive contribution to both of these causes-and trade unionism in New Zealand-the committee determined after her death in September 2005 that it would commemorate her memory by holding a biennial lecture in her honour.

The Labour History Project has been fortunate to secure the services of well-known historian and writer Dick Scott to give the Second Rona Bailey Memorial Lecture in the Rona Bailey Room at Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School at 11 Hutchison Rd, Newtown, on 3 December 2009, at 7.00pm.

The lecture will be followed by Chris Prowse and fellow musicians performing songs from his recently written musical Trouble on The Waterfront.

Entry to Dick Scott’s lecture will be by donation and afterwards the LHP will hold its Christmas Party for 2009. The lecture is open to the public; members are encouraged to ‘spread the word’ about it.

Pat Mackie 1914-2009

I’d never heard of the great New Zealand-born union activist Pat Mackie until I went to the annual conference of the Australian Association for the Study of Labour History in Melbourne two years ago. There several people told me how, in the mid-1960s, this extraordinary and inspiring character dominated Australia’s fledgling TV news broadcasts during a famous mining strike. They also said that Pat had published his autobiography, Many Ships to Mt Isa, giving the story of his early life in New Zealand.

Kiwi Companeros- NZ and the Spanish Civil War

Kiwi Compañeros – New Zealand and the Spanish Civil War, published by Canterbury University Press in association with the LHP and edited by LHP chair Mark Derby, will be released in May 2009.

Based on a TUHP seminar in November 2006, this is the first- ever account of New Zealand’s role in the civil war that tore Spain during 1936-39, and became a ruthless rehearsal for World War Two. Kiwi Compañeros records the actions of the
New Zealanders who took part, including those who worked for the Spanish cause at home. It draws on recently released military documents and previously unpublished photographs to tell the all-but-forgotten story of those who chose to enter
a crucial conflict on the far side of the world.
