Brian Wood, The Great ‘08: Blackball Coal Miners’ Strike 27 February - 13 May 1908

In The Great ‘08, Brian has written the most detailed account yet of the Blackball Strike.

His book revises the existing history of the strike in several important respects, re-examining workers' and employers' roles in this pivotal event in New Zealand's industrial history.

2009 Rona Bailey Memorial Lecture

Rona Bailey was an icon of left-wing politics in New Zealand as well as being a founding member of the TUHP Committee. To acknowledge her massive contribution to both of these causes-and trade unionism in New Zealand-the committee determined after her death in September 2005 that it would commemorate her memory by holding a biennial lecture in her honour.

The Labour History Project has been fortunate to secure the services of well-known historian and writer Dick Scott to give the Second Rona Bailey Memorial Lecture in the Rona Bailey Room at Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School at 11 Hutchison Rd, Newtown, on 3 December 2009, at 7.00pm.

The lecture will be followed by Chris Prowse and fellow musicians performing songs from his recently written musical Trouble on The Waterfront.

Entry to Dick Scott’s lecture will be by donation and afterwards the LHP will hold its Christmas Party for 2009. The lecture is open to the public; members are encouraged to ‘spread the word’ about it.

Pat Mackie 1914-2009

I’d never heard of the great New Zealand-born union activist Pat Mackie until I went to the annual conference of the Australian Association for the Study of Labour History in Melbourne two years ago. There several people told me how, in the mid-1960s, this extraordinary and inspiring character dominated Australia’s fledgling TV news broadcasts during a famous mining strike. They also said that Pat had published his autobiography, Many Ships to Mt Isa, giving the story of his early life in New Zealand.
